As the Aug. 2 voting date approaches, many Kansans have reported that their "Vote Yes" signs have been vandalized or stolen. | Value Them Both/Facebook
Value Them Both Coalition, a Kansas organization advocating for the pro-life "Value Them Both" amendment to the state's constitution, recently said that many yard signs have been reported as being stolen or vandalized and provided suggestions to area residents to help prevent that from happening.
"I think we're seeing more and more of this type of vandalism and violence," said Shannon Pahls, executive director of the Kansas Republican Party, according to Fox News. "We're seeing this happen throughout the country and, unfortunately, all too often our Democratic leaders are pretty silent on the issue."
Kansans will have the opportunity to vote on the legality of abortion in the state on Aug. 2, when the Value Them Both amendment will be on the ballot. In the week following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the Cowley County GOP office in Winfield, Kansas, was vandalized. Value Them Both Coalition campaign materials were lighted on fire outside of the building, according to Fox News. The report said the alleged assailant, Scott Redford, also vandalized the building by breaking a glass door with a rock.
As the voting date approaches, many Kansas residents have reported their "Vote Yes" signs have been vandalized or stolen. In response, Value Them Both Coalition provided some advice for Kansans to protect their signs.
"We’re hearing daily from Kansans who have had their VOTE YES signs stolen or vandalized, so we decided to come up with a short list of tips to help," Value Them Both wrote in a June 21 Facebook post. "1. Place your sign close to your home, away from the street, and in view of any security camera. 2. Staple the top and bottom of your sign and apply a slick substance (WD-40, etc) on the edges. 3. Organize a Neighborhood Watch with other VTB sign owners on your block. 4. Report acts of vandalism and theft to your local authorities. 5. Consider making a donation to help us replenish our supply to put even more signs in even more yards!"
The Value Them Both amendment would add the following language to the Kansas Constitution: "Because Kansans value both women and children, the constitution of the state of Kansas does not require government funding of abortion and does not create or secure a right to abortion. To the extent permitted by the Constitution of the United States, the people, through their elected state representatives and state senators, may pass laws regarding abortion, including, but not limited to, laws that account for circumstances of pregnancy resulting from rape or incest, or circumstances of necessity to save the life of the mother."
Voting against the amendment would limit the ability of Kansas lawmakers to restrict abortion, according to the coalition.
The Value Them Both amendment would not ban abortion in the state of Kansas, but would leave the door open for lawmakers to enact protections, such as restricting second and third trimester abortions, which involve dismembering babies, the coalition said.
The Value Them Both Coalition is comprised of Kansas organizations and residents advocating for the Value Them Both amendment. Supporting organizations include Focus on the Family and Concerned Women for America of Kansas.
